There are still a lot of misconceptions people have about Psychology, about seeing a Psychologist, and often these really hold you back from starting to take care of yourself with the help of an objective, supportive professional, a Psychologist.
Just to mention and dispel some of these misconceptions:
1. “Only people who have a serious problem or who are crazy go to a Psychologist.” Many people go to a Psychologist to gain greater self-awareness, to function better in certain areas of life or in certain roles, to adapt better at a particular stage of life, or even to get support with a life event. Nowadays, taking care of your mind and soul is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. Seeing a psychologist does not require you to have a specific problem. Do not feel that you have to hide the fact that you are seeing a Psychologist. I would say be proud of yourself for taking care of yourself and never be ashamed of it!
2. “I have to go to a Psychologist for years to solve my problems, so I’d rather not start.” For me, as a Psychologist, the goal is to empower my clients to be able to handle life challenges on their own. As a supportive professional, I will be there for as long as you need me to be, but you will not depend on me to solve your life’s issues, but you will be empowered to navigate your life effectively. It is not necessary to dwell on the past for years, but the goal is to use all the experience you have gained from the past, integrating and accepting all that has happened, to move forward into the present as a strong person. Once I know what your real problem is, I will make sure to help you in the best way for you.
3. “Just by learning about Psychology, I can heal myself.” It is important to emphasize that it can be helpful to gain knowledge about your own functioning from books and lectures. However, this is no substitute for the need for a professional who is knowledgeable and whose profession is indeed related to this field, to get effective help with our challenges from an external person who can see us from an objective point of view.
We need to recognise that very often such misconceptions and other limiting beliefs hold us back from moving towards well-being in our lives and taking the necessary steps to achieve it.
